Sundays, April 27th - May 25th This class will be held in multiple locations which we will discuss easch week.
This 5-week course will prepare you and your canine companion for the AKC Community Canine Good Citizen (CGCA) test. The CGCA is the next level of good citizenship training after the AKC Canine Good Citizen and is a prerequisite for many therapy dog organizations. This class focuses on real-world scenarios and builds upon basic obedience skills to ensure your dog is a well-behaved member of the community. Dogs must pass all 10 items of the CGCA test to earn the title.
What we will cover during the class.
Each week, we will work on behaviors required for the CGCA test, gradually increasing the difficulty and distractions:
1. Waiting Politely: Dog remains standing, sitting, or lying down under control while the owner completes a task (e.g., filling out paperwork, visiting with someone).
2. Loose Leash Walking: Maintaining a loose leash while walking at a natural pace, including turns, stops, and changes in pace (fast and slow). Focus will be on preventing pulling.
3. Walking Through a Crowd: Navigating a crowd safely and politely on leash.
4. Passing Distraction Dogs: Walking calmly past other dogs without pulling or reacting excessively.
5. Sit-Stay in a Small Group: Maintaining a sit-stay position with other dogs and people present.
6. Greeting a Friendly Stranger: Allowing a stranger carrying an item to approach and pet the dog politely.
7. "Leave It": Ignoring food or other distractions on cue.
8. Distance Down or Sit-Stay: Maintaining a down or sit-stay while the owner walks away and returns.
9. Recall with Distractions: Coming when called with distractions present.
10. Doorway/Passageway Manners: Entering and exiting doorways or narrow passageways calmly and under control, without pulling.
**Important Note:** This is a preparation class. The Test will be held on July 20th at 3:00
