On Wednesday 8 October, Dub Me Always is pleased to present the return of the mighty Java Nuclear Power sound with selector Macca and MC Joe 90, playing alongside host DJ, David Katz, plus at 8pm sharp, a book launch for the revised edition of Alexander Newman’s Greensleeves: the First 100 Covers, with a Q&A with Mr Newman and a Greensleeves Hi-Fi DJ set featuring Adam Prescott!
Formed in Northwest London in 1972, Java quickly established its reputation on the circuit and became of the leading sound systems of the day via the recruitment of selector Macca, formerly with Lord Koos’ sound. In the 1980s and 90s Java dominated through their arsenal of distinctive dub plates and the large crew of talented singers and DJs on the mic, including the iconic Joe 90, Sweetie Irie, Starky Banton, Cowboy, and Sister Asher, among others, making Java the Gold Cup champions in 1986. Still going strong decades later, we are delighted to host Macca and Joe 90 once more, playing vintage roots and foundation dancehall style, with a selection of the original one-off dub plates with which they made their name.
Alexander Newman’s lavishly illustrated coffee-table book Greensleeves: The First 100 Covers documents the story of Greensleeves Records, from its origins as a mid-1970s West London record shop to its evolution into a pioneering record label that brought the cream of upfront, uncut Jamaican music to the world. With a focus on the label’s formative years and first 100 album covers, a series of in-depth interviews with key figures offer insights into the music, musicians and business practices that established Greensleeves as one of the most influential reggae and dancehall labels of all time. Featuring previously unseen photographs and archive material, as well as a comprehensive label discography, Greensleeves: The First 100 Covers is an essential addition to the library of the discerning music connoisseur. Signed author copies will be available on the night at a discount – come early to bag your copy! The accompanying DJ set by Adam Prescott, representing Greensleeves Hi-Fi, will focus on label’s formative years as featured in the book – more crucial fuel for your dancing feet.
What will Macca pull out of the bag to lay the musical bedrock for Joe 90’s spitfire lyrics when Java takes control? There’s only one way to find out… last time they played was a total roadblock, so come early to avoid disappointment!
