The Spirit Moves (1987) je dokumentarni film režiserke Mure Dehn, ki skozi tri dele prikazuje razvoj afroameriškega družabnega plesa od začetka 20. stoletja do 1980-ih. Film je izjemen arhiv plesnih slogov, ki so zaznamovali ameriško kulturo, in vključuje redke posnetke plesalcev iz slavne dvorane Savoy Ballroom v Harlemu.
V dokumentarcu najdemo bogato paleto plesnih stilov, vključno z Ragtime in Cakewalk, Charleston, Blues, Lindy Hop in Mambo. Tu najdemo tudi solo Savoy koreografije kot so Tranky Doo, Big Apple in Shim Sham. This evening will be dedicated to the art of film. We will watch the cult dance documentary The Spirit Moves, which traces the history of African-American dance in the 20th century. The screening will be followed by a discussion evening where we will reflect together on the historical context, the impact of dance culture and personal impressions from the film. Join us for an evening of movement, deep reflection and shared exchange.
The Spirit Moves (1987) is a documentary film by director Maura Dehn, which traces the development of African-American ballroom dance from the early 20th century to the 1980s in three parts. The film is a remarkable archive of the dance styles that have shaped American culture and includes rare footage of dancers at the famous Savoy Ballroom in Harlem.
The documentary features a rich variety of dance styles including Ragtime and Cakewalk, Charleston, Blues, Lindy Hop and Mambo. There are also solo Savoy choreographies such as Tranky Doo, Big Apple and Shim Sham.
