Join us for a three-part series in July on the art and history of wool processing, from raw fleece to finished yarn. Each session blends hands-on experience with insights into both 18th-century and modern techniques.
Part One: Processing
📅 July 12th, 10:00 AM
We begin with raw fleece in hand. Learn how to identify and select quality wool, then dive into traditional 18th-century scouring methods alongside modern alternatives. We'll discuss how to properly wash, sort, and prepare wool for carding, with practical tips on storing your processed fibers.
Part Two: Carding
📅 July 19th, 10:00 AM
With our fleece now clean and dry, we’ll explore the process of carding—transforming wool into spinnable roving. Try your hand at both hand cards and drum carders, and compare modern tools with those used in the 18th century. We'll also look at creative ways to use roving beyond spinning.
Part Three: Spinning
📅 July 26th, 10:00 AM
Now that we’ve prepared our roving, we’ll delve into the art of spinning. Learn foundational spinning techniques using drop spindles and spinning wheels, and experiment with fiber types. We’ll also introduce natural dyes and discuss how to use your finished yarn in projects both practical and artistic.
Admission Prices for our Hands On Series is as follows:
$12 per session
or
$30 per whole three part series
