Open Teaching Apiary- Lincoln, NE UNL East Campus 2025

Open Apiary times are an informal unstructured gathering of members of the Great Plains Master Beekeeping program at the UNL Bee Lab research apiary in Lincoln Nebraska. There will be brief demonstrations, questions and answers, and time to get hands on experience with beehives.

*Cost: Great Plains Master Beekeeping members: FREE.

*Open Apiary times will be the second Thursday of the month from 6-7PM unless otherwise stated.

Open Apiary will count as an hour of field training towards your progress through the Great Plains Master Beekeeping program.


***Please bring closed toed shoes and outdoor wear. Please bring your own bee suits but not your own hive tools please. We can provide bee suits if you do not have them; let us know your approximate shirt size when you register so we bring the correct fit for you.

2025 Schedule:
April 10 – Install and inspect hives, check colony conditions, feed if necessary, perform varroa checks, and discuss colony management, swarm monitoring, and re-queening.

May 8 – Perform hive inspections, check for queen and brood patterns, assess supersedure cells, and discuss swarm management, nectar flow, and nucleus colony feeding.

June 12 – Conduct health inspections, add honey supers if needed, manage small hive beetles and wax moths, and address pest pressure.

July 10 – Continue health inspections, check queen’s status, prevent robbing behavior, and protect colonies during honey production.

August 14 – Perform health inspections and varroa checks, manage fall feeding, and prepare colonies for winter.

September 11 – Conduct health inspections, remove honey supers, reduce hive entrances for winter, and plan for fall flow and pollinators.
