Monday Night Big Band Directed by Dean Haist

The Monday Night Big Band is a biweekly performance as a part of the Capital Jazz Society Jazz series. It finds its roots in the same tradition as the Village Vanguard in New York City. The band is made up of a variety of musicians in the area and is different each week.
Dean is a native of Nebraska and a seasoned musical entrepreneur deeply involved in the nonprofit arts scene. He holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and taught for 31 years at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He is the President of Arts Incorporated, which manages numerous music organizations and series across Nebraska. Dean is a trumpet player and serves as Executive Director and principal trumpeter for several ensembles including the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Nebraska Brass, Lincoln Municipal Band, Capital Jazz Society, and Nebraska Trumpet Ensemble. He co-founded and directs the Grand Island Music Series. A frequent performer at international trumpet conferences and a member of the International Trumpet Guild, Dean has also served on local arts boards and panels. He was named Nonprofit Executive of the Year in 1997 and earned a Mayor’s Arts Award in 2021 for his work during the pandemic. As a freelance musician, he has performed with over 100 groups including the Omaha and Lincoln Symphony Orchestras, and worked with a wide range of artists from Bob Hope and Aaron Copland to Maroon Five and Doc Severinsen. His work spans TV, film, cruise ships, and over two dozen recordings. Outside of music, Dean enjoys gardening and caring for his pets—including exotic fish, and a rescue parrot named Clover.
