Tonight we’re celebrating all things English in honour of St George’s Day and we have some of the very best practitioners of English music performing live for us.
The Boxwood Chessmen are a semi-acoustic, four piece band from East Anglia and Middlesex, comprising: Penni McLaren Walker on lead vocals, guitars, bouzouki, whistles, kazoo, accordion and percussion, though not necessarily all at the same time; Hector Ringtone, AKA Steve Collins on vocals, melodeon, ukulele, harmonica, guitar, kazoo and percussion; John Campbell Armer on vocals, bass, guitars, percussion; and Bryan Causton on vocals, mandolin, guitar, bouzouki and percussion.
The band plays a variety of styles including Folk, Americana, Angliana, hokum and a light dusting of swing all delivered with panache and fun ….. Pretty much anything goes into the pot. But this evening they’ll be leaning into their English Folk repertoire, just for us!
Barry Goodman is a great friend of the club and has been involved in the folk music scene for the past fifty years! Barry sings songs from the English tradition as well as some of his own compositions and songs from other writers, accompanied by melodeon, concertina or guitar, and lots of humour!
A Sailor Among Tailors are a folk duo based in Leeds. The band is made up of Rowan (Guitar, Bass & Percussion) and Perseus (Harmonica & Piano). They play traditional folk tunes from the 16th Century to the modern era.
Doors open 7:00pm. Free entry but please bring cash for the 'hat' and the raffle!
