MCOP Leesburg Presents: Prosthetic 101

This course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with foundational knowledge essential for supporting individuals with limb loss during the early stages of rehabilitation.

Healthcare professionals play a vital role in educating patients about their care following amputation. Understanding and effectively communicating key information helps ensure a smoother transition through the rehabilitation process. Additionally, the ability to recognize and address common early stage issues - such as skin breakdown, improper socket fit, and fall risk - can significantly improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and promote safety.

Topics covered in this course include:

• Purpose and application of limb shrinkers
• Proper use and management of prosthetic ply socks
• Overview of suspension systems for both transtibial (below-knee) and transfemoral (above-knee) amputations
• Types of prosthetic knee joints used in transfemoral prostheses
• Fundamentals of assessing prosthetic fit

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Explain essential patient education topics during the pre-prosthetic training phase
• Demonstrate how to apply and adjust prosthetic socks for proper fit
• Evaluate ply sock types and their appropriate use
• Identify correct socket depth and limb alignment
• Describe various types of prosthetic knee joints for both transtibial and transfemoral amputees
• Recognize key gait characteristics and post-gait training indicators in new prosthetic users
