Provided for each student: Small Notebook with Pen and Pencil, measuring tape, various forms for organization, plus tips and tricks-of-the-trade. Hands on practice sewing various materials on a machine. An invitation to intern for Cité des Arts 3rd Season Play of The Lost Boy (from team design, fitting & building during August for production in September)
Saturday -Day 1 Discussion/ Overview of how discovery (communication with play script/director), research, drawing/design, and budgets work within a team. Obvious questions/answers would be exchanged. Examples of Costumes displayed for discussion. Project - Quest: An object to be brought in by each student (for Sunday) to work/ incorporate into a design.
Sunday - Day 2 Discussion of thematic images with play in mind, relationship of characters and era, will be followed by research, tools, and time management. Practice with taking measurements, sewing on a machine and a few techniques for making patterns. Decisions on fabric, threads, notions, and creation, followed by drawing/renderings and discussions of choices would follow. Partners, or a team, will put the found objects to work.
There will be a brief discussion of make-up, wigs, hats, shoes, etc.
Lauren Greene Whyte has been a costumer for over 40 years, specializing in Historical Theatrical Dress. Her experiences with professional costume building included working with Michael Curry in NYC (of The Lion King Broadway fame), as well as winning awards for her original designs. Her historical designs for Cité des Arts’ productions of The Rehearsal, She Stoops to Conquer and The Lion in Winter, as well as Theatre 810’s Medusa, have shown originality and professionalism in her custom designs. Character-specific designs in Cite des Arts’ The Real Inspector Hound and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest further displayed her skills.
