Welcome to the Thurston County Dependency Retreat!

This training session will explore critical aspects of child welfare and family systems, centering on the dual themes of The Harm of Removal and The Science of Hope. Presenters will included Laura Vogel and Jon Tunheim

Key Topics Covered:

• The Harm of Removal:
  Laura Vogel will present information that covers psychological, emotional, and developmental impacts on children who are separated from their families. Evidence will be shared on how removal—even when well-intentioned—can result in trauma, attachment disruption, and long-term adverse outcomes. The importance of preserving family integrity and using removal as a last resort was stressed

• The Science of Hope:
  Jon Tunheim will introduce the “Science of Hope” as a framework for supporting families. Attendees will learn how building hope can mitigate trauma, promote healing, and foster resilience. Hope will be presented as a measurable and teachable construct that can be applied in case planning and community engagement.
