Grab your safety glasses, gloves and a rock hammer and let's mine for fossils! Our afternoon will begin at the Jackson WI Park-n-Ride lot where we will catch a bus at 1:30pm to Lannon Stone Quarry. Our guide will accompany us down into the limestone quarry, telling us all about their business, the history of the area, the huge machines they use and what happens to all the stone taken from this location. Then we will hop off the bus with our rockhounding tools and safety gear to try our hand at finding fossils in the rubble. You get to keep your treasures too! There will be a couple mining machines for us to explore as well. The bus will depart at 3:30pm to bring us back to the Park-n-Ride.
All participants entering the quarry must view this safety video prior to our tour:
Please come dressed for the weather and rockhounding activities. Suggested clothing would be sturdy close-toed shoes (required), a hat, long pants and a light shirt (it tends to get pretty hot down in the quarry). For rockhounding a pair of work gloves, safety glasses and appropriate tools (rock hammer and chisel). And don't forget a bottle of water for you and a bucket or bag for your treasures!
