Degu Debut

Meet the Conservatory's newest animal stars! The Degu 5. What is a degu, you ask? A degu is a small, social rodent native to central Chile. Found in the upper elevations of the Andes Mountains; rainforest adjacent. They make great pets like Guinea pigs and chinchillas, but for some reason are not as well known or as widely available as the others.

We have worked with EARPS IN (Exotic Animal Rescue and Protection Society) to provide a new home to 5 of these little guys, since they are social animals and should be housed in groups of 3 or more. In working with EARPS we are also hoping help promote our dual missions of "responsible pet ownership". Because, often we get asked, "what does it take to raise... a corn snake, a degu, an anole, etc.?" However, these animals will also be used in "sub-tropical eco-region" educational programming for school field trips and they will may also star in one of our monthy Critter Chats.

I could tell you so much more about these cute and curious critters here in the description, but you should just come to the program to find out! Program is free and no-pre-registration needed. It is a drop-in program, however, it is recommended to come right at 2 to get the full program experience.
