Behind the Joy is a powerful and emotionally resonant narrative film that explores the often-silenced experience of postpartum depression. The story follows a young couple navigating the emotional, psychological, and relational challenges that emerge after the birth of their child. As joy and celebration give way to confusion and isolation, the film intimately reveals how untreated maternal mental health issues ripple through families — and how healing becomes possible through honesty, support, and community.
Grounded in real stories and guided by input from mental health professionals, doulas, and mothers, Behind the Joy aims to dismantle stigma, open up dialogue, and raise awareness around a topic that is too often pushed aside. With poignant performances, thoughtful direction, and an urgent message, this film invites viewers to witness the vulnerability and strength it takes to face postpartum depression — and to stand beside those who are silently battling it.
Jamal Smart is a filmmaker and mental health advocate committed to telling stories that spark healing and connection. His debut film, Behind the Joy, explores postpartum depression within the Black community, inspired by a desire to create work his daughter can be proud of. With production credits including BET, VH1, and major fashion campaigns, Jamal has shifted toward purpose-driven storytelling. In addition to filmmaking, he leads live panels and workshops in partnership with mental health professionals and community organizations, using film as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue and change.
