Led by local Hill and Moorland Leader John Figiel
Kinder Scout, the highest point of the Peak District, is an iconic moorland plateau that offers up a true adventure for those venturing up onto its forbidding summit.
Safe in the experienced hands of local professional guides, you are free to enjoy breathtaking views, explore its vast wild interior and marvel at the dramatic wind carved rock formations that help create Kinder's unique atmosphere. We climb out of Edale to the gritstone outcrops of Ringing Roger, and from there, travel across Kinder's isolated plateau, to the spectacular northern and western edges. Reaching Kinder Downfall (the Peak District's highest waterfall and one with a habit of flowing upwards if the wind is in the right direction) we leave behind the views down to Mermaid's Pool and Kinder Reservoir, to follow barely discernible sheep trods as we travel along the legendary crossing path.
Our journey now takes us through incredible rock formations to Kinder Low and a descent down Jacob's Ladder, to the historic packhorse bridge, and on back to Edale. A celebratory drink may be called for, both as a gesture of support to the local economy, and to give the chance to reflect on a fantastic day in the hills. Kinder Scout is an exposed and challenging environment to spend time in, and the terrain can be very demanding.
A reasonable level of fitness is required, but this is a route that is readily achievable with a little determination from you, and a little support and navigation from ourselves.
Ethels: 1 Itinerary: We meet at the Edale Car Park (W3W kitchen.complains.shelving) between 07.45 and 08.00 After a quick safety briefing we begin our walk. The walk is approximately 24 km (15 miles) long, and follows both footpaths and wet open moorland. There are some uneven and rocky sections, and the very nature of the event means there will be a steep climb and descent on and off the plateau. Our pace will be relaxed! Guiding is in a small group of no more than 10 people by an experienced local guide. Please note, this is a challenging route and requires a reasonable standard of fitness. The walk concludes back at Edale at approximately 18.00 with the opportunity for a debrief over drinks and food as a gesture of economic support to the local community.
