This herbal workshop series takes you step by step through learning about medicinal herbs, how to grow them and safely make your own herbal remedies. We will start this journey at the beginning, choosing herbal allies to work with and planting them from seed. As we move through the growing season, you will learn how to safely identify medicinal plants growing in our area, the ethics and practice of wild harvesting, basic Plant Spirit Communication, when to harvest what parts of the plant, how to make a variety of herbal remedies and learn how to use them, and much more. Taught by local Herbalist, Jen Knight, who brings over 28 years of experience to these in-depth classes. If you have wanted to learn more about safely working with and growing herbs and making your own herbal remedies, then this class series is for you!
Read on to learn more about what each workshop will cover:
Class I - Herbal Wisdom & Seed Starting
Learn the most versatile herbs that can be grown in our bioregion that every household can utilize and the range of ailments they can be used for. You will choose which plants you would most benefit from and would like to cultivate a relationship with. Then you will plant seeds of the herbs you have chosen to work with and will bring home your planted seeds in pots to grow in your own garden or planters. We will go over various factors to consider when choosing where to plant them in your yard.
Class II – Early Spring Herbs, Medicinal Herb Walk, & Plant Spirit Communication
We will embark on a medicinal herb walk and identify some of the wild herbs that grow in our bioregion that can be harvested in the Spring. You will learn the ethics of wild harvesting, appropriate areas to harvest, and field identification tips. You will learn about and experience the basics of Plant Spirit Communication to help guide our harvesting. We will discuss water-based extraction methods and incorporating herbs into the foods of the season.
Class III – Late Spring Herbs, Planting Microclimates, & Vinegar-Based Remedies
We will discuss planting out your seedlings from the first class and how to identify the micro-climates within your yard to best support their optimal growth. Then we will venture out into the garden to learn about and harvest some of the medicinal herbs that are ready in late Spring. We will revisit the basics of Plant Spirit Communication to help guide our harvesting. We will discuss vinegar-based extraction methods. Next, we will dive into hands on medicine making, which will include a poultice. You will bring home a jar of the herbal remedies we make.
Class IV – Early Summer Herbs & Glycerin-Based Extractions
We will discuss early summer herbal remedies, and what plants are ready to be harvested for use during this time of the growing season. Then we will revisit Plant Spirit Communication before venturing out into the garden to identify and harvest some of these herbs. We will make a glycerin-based extraction from some of the plants we harvest. You will leave with a jar of the remedy we make.
Class V – Mid-Summer Herbs & Making Herbal Infused Oils
We will discuss mid-summer herbal remedies and what plants are ready to be harvested for use during the height of the growing season. You will learn how to make an herbal infused oil using fresh medicinal herbs. We will utilize a warming method to make this infused oil. We will discuss additional methods for making oil-based remedies. You will bring home some of the remedies we make during class, including a bottle of oil.
Class VI – Late Summer Herbs & Making Herbal Salve
We will discuss late summer herbal remedies and what plants are ready to be harvested for use during the latter part of the growing season. We will go out into the garden to harvest some of these herbs to dry for teas. We will make an herbal salve from the oil we made in Class V. You will bring home some of the remedies we make during class, including a jar of salve.
Class VII – Early Fall Herbs, Making Tincture, & Seed Saving
We will discuss the herbal remedies of fall, and what plants are ready to be harvested for use during the end of the growing season. We will go out into the garden to harvest some of these herbs to make an alcohol-based extraction known as a tincture. While in the garden we will also discuss seed saving methods. You will bring home some of the remedies we make during class, including a bottle of tincture.
The investment for this series is $280 if paid in full, or 7 payments of $45, and covers materials for making the herbal remedies and seed starting.
