La Arpillera es una expresión artística textil que, en la historia reciente de Chile, ha ocupado un lugar significativo tanto en lo tradicional como en lo testimonial y comunitario. Se configura como herramienta narrativa visual de procesos sociales y se establece como medio de expresión vivencial. Buscamos, desde la distancia, revitalizar este medio de expresión y símbolo de solidaridad.
Las Arpilleras de las mujeres de Isla Negra, reconocidas como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de Chile; las de Violeta Parra, que forman parte del riquísimo legado visual de esta imprescindible artista chilena; y las obras expresivas y testimoniales de las arpilleristas surgidas en el marco de la cultura disidente durante la dictadura, son las experiencias que motivan este taller participativo.
Esta vez, tomaremos parte de la obra Gabriela Mistral como base del proceso creativo que culminará con una exhibición de las obras textiles acompañadas de sus respectivos poemas y traducciones.
Nos inspiramos en Gabriela Mistral, por la conmemoración de los 80 años del Nobel de literatura, y por la relevancia y profundidad de su legado como mujer y poeta, cuya obra entrelaza de manera lúcida y comprometida su preocupación por la paz, la democracia, los derechos humanos, la equidad social y la liberación de América Latina.

Four sessions to create a textile work of art with appliqué and/or embroidery inspired by the poetry of Gabriela Mistral.
Arpillera (burlap) is a textile art form that, in Chile’s recent history, has held a significant place both in traditional contexts and in testimonial and community expressions. It serves as a visual narrative tool for social processes and acts as a medium for lived expression. From afar, we seek to revitalise this form of expression and its role as a symbol of solidarity.
The Arpilleras of the women of Isla Negra, recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Chile; those of Violeta Parra, part of the rich visual legacy of this essential Chilean artist; and the expressive, testimonial works of arpilleristas that emerged within dissident culture during the dictatorship—these are the experiences that inspire this participatory workshop.
This time, we will draw from the work of Gabriela Mistral as the foundation of the creative process, which will culminate in an exhibition of the textile artworks alongside their respective poems and translations.
We are inspired by Gabriela Mistral in honor of the 80th anniversary of her Nobel Prize in Literature, and because of the relevance and depth of her legacy as a woman and poet. Her work weaves together, with clarity and commitment, her concern for peace, democracy, human rights, social equity, and the liberation of Latin America.
