"Beyond the Horizon
From across the lake,
Past the black winter trees,
Faint sounds of a flute."
Richard Wright
Let us step into a concert inspired by the Sarashina Diary (Sarashina nikki), written in the 11th century by Sugawara no Takasue no Musume, a sensitive and literary-minded young Japanese woman. Her diary spans about forty years, capturing daily encounters, dreams, aspirations, and poetry. What makes her writing so beautiful is the comfort she finds in expressing herself through words. Birth, sickness, old age, and death inevitably bring suffering, yet the magic of imaginative language offers a way to bear this pain. Although Sugawara no Takasue no Musume’s writings are not included in this concert’s programme, her idea of bringing light through art resonates within the music.
Joined by outstanding musicians from Finland and Estonia, Leiu Ryland-Jones presents a master’s recital that blends together different eras, styles, cultures, and backgrounds. The programme features poetry that seeks to capture and convey the many angles of human emotions.
Join us for this captivating evening, where music and poetry come together to explore the richness of human experience.
