The broom has always been more than a household tool. It is a symbol of boundaries, protection, cleansing, and flight.
Traditionally used as a humble cleaning tool, the besom carries a powerful legacy in folklore and myth. Witches were said to “ride” them, villagers placed them by the door to keep away unwanted spirits, and they were used to sweep thresholds clean before ritual. Today, besoms are embraced in modern spiritual practice as symbols of protection, purification, and the sweeping away of stagnant energies. And with their earthy beauty, they also make striking seasonal decorations for Halloween and Samhain.
On this autumn night, you’ll step into that lineage of wise women and craft your own full-size besom broom to keep at your doorway, sweep your sacred space, or use in seasonal ritual.
