About the event

The Hobby: Tales from the Tabletop - Screening & Q+A!
What can happen when you roll two dice? Everything, apparently. Because dice, checkers and board can be portals to something much bigger than just a game. It’s about community, emotion and participation – but it’s also about winning!

🎬The Hobby takes us from the World Board Game Championships in Las Vegas to dating and all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia, because board games and the desire to play have deep roots. Through personal narratives, players around the world share fascinating stories of competition, passion, creativity and imagination, and about how a single game can bridge people and cultures. A character-driven, affectionate portrait of board game culture, this is a film that inventively and charmingly ponders the importance of ‘meaningless’ activities in life. A film for the trained, the casual gamer and beginners alike.

✨Post-screening Q+A with director Simon Ennis and moderator Steven Edmonds, co-owner of The Bard and Bear Games Café!

Touted by the CBC as “a filmmaker to watch”, Simon Ennis is the award-winning writer-director of the feature films The Hobby, Lunarcy!, and You Might As Well Live, the television documentaries Man vs. Machine (part of the CSA-nominated series Engraved on a Nation) and This Is Pop (Netflix), as well as numerous short films. His work has screened at some of the top international film festivals including TIFF, SXSW, IDFA, Slamdance, True/False, and Fantasia, and has been praised by the New York Times, Variety, and the Toronto Star, among other publications. Simon tells stories with humour and heart, often focusing on dreamers and eccentrics… like himself.

Steven Edmonds co-owns The Bard and Bear Games Café on James Street North here in Hamilton. He’s worked for over a decade teaching, recommending, and selling board games, and is himself an active player in all corners of the tabletop game world. Steven loves bringing tabletop gaming to new people and places, and recently partnered with Write Like to join celebrity DM Aabria Iyengar in a live D&D Masterclass.
