Glasgow Print Studio, first floor gallery
Preview: Thursday 03 July
Exhibition runs: 04 July - 26 July
This exhibition celebrates the life and work of the late Gregor Smith, a deeply respected and much-loved member of the Glasgow Print Studio community, who passed away earlier this year.
Born in Renton and educated at Edinburgh College of Art, Gregor was a dedicated painter and printmaker whose practice spanned oil, watercolour, and printmaking. His work reflected a lifelong sensitivity to Scotland’s natural landscapes and ever-changing weather — from dramatic coastal scenes to quiet studies of shifting light and seasonal atmosphere.
Gregor brought a deep integrity and thoughtfulness to everything he created. His sketchbooks, often filled in wild and wintry conditions, were the first stage of a process that translated the rawness of nature into poetic and atmospheric compositions. His work resonated with viewers for its sense of place, mood, and quiet power.
Over the decades, Gregor exhibited widely, including several solo exhibitions at Glasgow Print Studio, Compass Gallery, Lillie Art Gallery, and Torrance Gallery, and regularly showed in the RSA, RSW, and RGI. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1983, and his work is held in collections across the UK and beyond.
More than his achievements, Gregor will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and gentle humour. He was a valued member of our artistic family — always supportive, always curious, and always quietly working, sketchbook in hand.
We are honoured to present this posthumous exhibition of Gregor’s work — a tribute to his remarkable career and enduring presence within our community.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Liz, Gregor’s wife, for her generosity in helping to bring this exhibition to life.
