STRANGE EDITIONS 7.0
Our much-loved book club, Strange Editions is back this August for another night as we see out the last of the cosy winter months!
This session will see WA born and raised writer Lisa Ellery come down to the venue to chat with the lovely Emma Young to discuss her brand new thriller novel, Hot Ground which is just about to be released!
As always, a bit of a reading, some deeper insight and a Q&A about the book will take place once everyone is settled and comfortable with a wine (or something equally delicious) in hand.
The novel will be available at the event through New Edition and some copies of it will also be for sale over the bar in the lead-up to the session. Our friendly staff will be more than happy to have a chat with you about the text and will give you any further info about the upcoming evening.

About the Author:
Lisa Ellery was born in 1975 and raised on a farm near Esperance on Western Australia’s south coast. She studied law and arts at the University of Western Australia before returning to regional WA in 1998 to commence her career as a lawyer in the goldmining city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. She soon fell in love with Kal and its people, and in 2008 she started her own law firm there, working predominantly in commercial and mining law.
Her debut novel, Private Prosecution, was published by Fremantle Press in 2021 and followed by Hot Ground in 2025 after Lisa sold her law practice to scale back her non-writing commitments. She is married to Simon Ellery, a geologist. She continues to live in Kalgoorlie and divides her time between the law, running and writing.

About the book:
For crime fiction fans of Dervla McTiernan and Jane Harper comes an outback police procedural where gold fever takes a deadly turn.
In the middle of the night in a remote part of Western Australia’s goldfields, the thud of a mallet on a marker peg sets off a chain reaction that unearths secrets long buried.
Detective Jessy Parkin – sent to policing purgatory in the aftermath of a tainted investigation – is tasked with finding Max Cochrane, a veteran prospector who has vanished into thin air.
What begins with a concerned daughter’s plea for help soon burgeons into a mystery as shapeshifting as a desert mirage. Fortunes are being built on the back of Kalgoorlie’s coveted gold, but the truth might be the rarest find of all.
PRAISE FOR THE BOOK
‘Hot Ground is an atmospheric goldfields mystery rich in authentic investigative detail. Jessy Parkin is a tenacious sleuth, a heroine for these twisted troubled times.’ Alan Carter
