phosphène, performance by armand lesecq
phosphene is a film for closed eyes and spatial sound. It employs projection on the audience’s eyelids, a multichannel sound setup, and motorised directional loudspeakers. inspired by dreams, neurosciences, and hypnosis, the project aims to explore a variety of inner spaces.it is an attempt to reach those territories we might tend to forget or deny, between the surface of the senses and our interpretation of reality, in the depths of imagination, illusions, and doubts.
the experience invites viewers to co-create a subjective film shaped by the signals from the setup and their personal interpretation. the composition triggers sensorial phenomenon (psycho-physic) and activates the mechanics of our perceptive system which tries to decipher a coherent reality. In a bidirectional dialogue of projection and injection, viewers filter, transform, and apply their inner intimate materials (memories, imagination) to the signals that reach them.
the performance invites us to collectively dive into those inner meanders and reconsider our reality-making processes.
phosphene has been developed at the artscience interfaculty (the hague, nl), laureate of the “digital arts, sound art & new writings" residency at château éphémère (fr), and received the “technology & society award" by waag future lab (amsterdam, nl)the project has been showed in various contexts and fields such as expanded cinema (venice art biennale, vex ljubljana, filmhuis den haag), experimental music (inkonst malmö, kontejner zagreb, vortex geneva), digital arts (mapping geneva, 36 degrés paris) and art science (waag amsterdam, le cube garges).
it has been presented in relation to topics of immersion, the human psyche, and alternative modes of vision (non-anthropocentric, untutored eyes, impaired). It has been created in parallel with research on dreams, human perception, and the political implications of our meaning-making processes.

about armand lesecq
armand lesecq (1994, fr) is an interdisciplinary artist and music composer whose practice spans sound and visual art,
art-science, experimental music, and expanded cinema.his research lies at the intersection of altered states of consciousness (hypnosis, lucid dreaming, sensory deprivation), psychophysical phenomena (otoacoustic emission, phosphene), and the role of mental projections in the process of reality-making (perception). His work focuses on inducing psychic states, suggesting mental imagery, and exploring perceptual ambiguity.
his practices consist of enabling experiences conducive to sensory, perceptive, and reflexive explorations.the aim is to involve the public in postures of acute attention focused on rare perceptual phenomena, neglected or denied in everyday life, and disorienting the mind away from the paths marked out by habits and lifestyles. In so doing, he questions the nature of our perceptions, the mental images that inhabit us and the certainties that guide us in our actions.
he is developing research on closed-eye cinema with the project phosphene, which inverts the cinematographic setup by using the eye as a screen and means of access to mental projections. he is active as an electronic musician in the experimental music scene, playing solo as well as in collaborative projects. he elaborates his sound materials using field recordings, no-input techniques (feedback), digital synthesis and processing, and a serge modular analog synthesizer. he specialized in sound spatialization and developed tools for creating spatial morphologies for use in composition and live performance.
he also works as a sound designer, mixer, and electroacoustic composer for film, installation, and performing arts.
armand has presented his work at various internationally recognised events such as venice art biennale (it), mapping (ch), waag (nl), kontejner (hr), inkonst (se), vex (si), iii (nl) & météo (fr). he is a co-founder of the experimental music label ligne de crête.
he graduated from the artscience Interfaculty master (kabk & kc, the hague, nl), studied at the hear strasbourg (fr) and electroacoustic music composition at the conservatoire de pantin (fr).
l'éloge de la folie
thursday of the first week of residency, we had 25 days ahead. the form commanded the process; a film in trichromy (color separation by rgb). thursday of the first week, and the idea for the film still wasn't there.
What if we made a symbolic journey from nantes to the sea, following a river—a passage from civilization to nature?
a bit cliché, perhaps, and also logistically complex. then we thought about symbology: blue is rational, red is emotional, and green... we never quite managed to find a symbol for green. the film was called You, the sun and told the story of an old man who became the sun through the process of desiring himself, an ebb and flow of emotions turned outward and inward. That didn't work either; it felt a bit too conceptual.
one night we went back home and in a moment of laughter mixed with disillusionment, we remembered those early films abbas kiarostami made for the iranian Ministry of Education: educational films for children: how to brush your teeth, how to learn the alphabet. there was one where children watched cartoons of animals and imitated their movements: a kangaroo, a tiger, an ostrich. That was it. an educational film about trichromy, with children and animals. the idea clicked, and a few days later we met the children shannon and ethan, and the animals who would become the protagonists, along with Remi, a retired man from the breil neighborhood who, in his youth, had done a play called
l'éloge de la folie in which children with mental health issues portrayed a farm of animals driven mad by a night of full moon. We aimed to create a free adaptation of that distant experience Remi had shared with us.
