In this class we will harvest both bark and root, and then explore the craft of designing, folding and stitching baskets. My greatest inspirations for this craft are the masterfully done and exquisite baskets of the original Interior people. Not only did these folks create beautiful objects, but they were meant for daily use. We will borrow from this tradition and wisdom as we collect materials and create our own baskets.
We will start Friday evening in the workshop, looking at examples, discussing design, making patterns, and then assessing our material needs. It is always best to have a picture in mind of your project before you collect materials. This saves time and minimizes material waste.
Saturday morning and early afternoon will be spent in the woods, harvesting spruce root and birch bark. We will then return to the workshop and spend the rest of the day processing root.
Sunday will be spent at The Folk School making our basket. Looking at a nicely made basket, the newcomer might think it is a simple and straightforward project, but there are many techniques and skills to be learned, and I assure you, after completing your first basket you will have an entirely new appreciation for folded baskets. This class is a comprehensive introduction to this craft, and hopefully a doorway into further exploration.
