BREAKING NEWS: Fake News Is... Still a Problem. But you know what isn’t a problem? Learning how to tell fact from fiction online.
The digital world is full of voices—some reliable, many not. From clickbait headlines to misinformation campaigns, it's harder than ever to know what's true. But don’t worry—you can learn to navigate the chaos.
This free, three-part workshop series will empower you with the tools to critically evaluate information online, understand how digital spaces work, and use the Internet to learn just about anything. Attend one, two, or all three sessions—whatever fits your schedule.
SESSION 1: What Is the Internet?
5 June 2025 | 5:30–7:00pm Exeter Library
The Internet is many things to many people—but did you know it started out as... a library?
In this engaging session, we’ll explore the surprisingly hopeful origins of the World Wide Web and examine how the digital space was built on principles of open knowledge and community. Learn how we can reclaim those ideals to empower ourselves in a modern context.
SESSION 2: Demystifying AI
19 June 2025 | 5:30–7:00pm Exeter Library
Artificial Intelligence is everywhere — but what is it really?
This session will cut through the hype and concerns to look at AI’s real origins (hint: it started with a chess-playing robot). We’ll explore how AI works, what it means for our daily lives, and how you could even use it to your advantage
SESSION 3: Digital Citizenship in the Age of Silicon Valley
3 July 2025 | 5:30–7:00pm Exeter Library
Who really controls the Internet? And what does that mean for you?
In our final session, we’ll dive into the power structures behind today’s tech giants and explore how data, algorithms, and user behaviour shape our online experiences. Most importantly, we’ll share practical ways to stay safe, informed, and empowered as responsible digital citizens—and discuss how we can work together to make the Internet a more equitable and inclusive space.
All sessions are free and include refreshments.
Advance booking is encouraged to help us plan accordingly. Please note: these are in-person sessions only.
