'From Land to Hand Workshop' Series

'From Land to Hand' is a creative project designed to hold space for students to explore community, place and belonging. This project proposes an arts-centered approach to explore themes of anti-racism and belonging and it shall revolve around a central material, henna. Henna is a plant-based dye that is used to stain the surface of skin, hair and nails and it is often applied as intricate patternwork. Henna has historical and cultural significance across a range of international and diaspora communities and is used during a variety of religious and cultural celebrations. The ‘From Land to Hand’ project invites students who have lived experience of using henna to commune over a mutual artistic practice along with students who are interested in learning about the cultural significance and artistry of henna.

The 'From Land to Hand' craft workshops offer students the opportunity to engage in creative exploration, celebration and discussion on themes of rootedness and belonging, as mediated through innovative and creative use of the henna plant. In July there will be a pop-up exhibition on campus to celebrate the artworks created and ideas explored. All workshop participants are invited to show something they create in the pop-up exhibition. More details on this will be shared during the workshop! (Please note participation in the pop-up exhibition is optional, there is no pressure to share anything you create!)

The 'From Land to Hand' project is supported by the Exeter Education Incubator and Wellbeing, Inclusion and Culture Committee.
