About the event

Developing an Online Deaf History Archive
Please join EdSign in welcoming renowned Deaf historian Dr Breda Carty for an inspiring presentation on the Deaf History Collections – a new, growing online archive preserving the rich history of Australia’s Deaf community.

Dr Breda Carty is an Australian deaf historian helping to develop the online Deaf History Collections archive. She has previously worked as a teacher of deaf students and a lecturer in deaf education. She is currently an Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University in Sydney, and was a Fellow at the State Library of New South Wales in 2017. She served as Secretary and newsletter editor of Deaf History International for many years. Her book Managing Their Own Affairs: The Australian Deaf Community During the 1920s and 1930s was published by Gallaudet University Press in 2018.

Dr Carty's presentation will share some examples of the materials in the archive, and explore the stories they can tell us. She will demonstrate how this free online resource can can be used to support teaching, research, and community memory. Come and discover some of the challenges and ethical issues that can arise when developing archives (both physical and digital).
