Inaugural Professorial Lecture - Professor David Berg

Join us for Professor David Berg's Inaugural Professorial Lecture titled "I Think I Can: The Power of Self-Efficacy in Educational Settings".

About Professor David Berg's research:
David Berg is the Academic Lead of the Curriculum Insights and Progress Study, a Ministry-funded assessment programme led by the Educational Assessment Research Unit in partnership with the New Zealand Council for Educational Research. He holds a Doctor of Education from the University of Otago. Before entering academia, David worked as a primary school teacher and deputy principal for 11 years, including a year teaching in rural Nepal and a secondment to Liverpool Hope University. He joined the University of Otago in 2007 as a research assistant and tutor while completing his doctoral study, and became a full-time lecturer in 2011.

David has taught across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in areas such as learning theory, assessment, and educational psychology. His teaching is shaped by a commitment to evidence-informed practice and to developing both self-efficacy and capability in learners. He supervises master’s and doctoral research focused on educational topics including efficacy beliefs and assessment. His research explores teacher self-efficacy, feedback, and the contextual factors influencing educational outcomes. Earlier work examined the evolving work of teacher educators
