Join us for Professor John Ashton's Inaugural Professorial Lecture titled "Pharmacology with skin in the game".
About Professor John Ashton's research:
John Ashton is a pharmacologist whose career spans environmental science, neurophysiology, and translational oncology. He began teaching at Waikato University and the Eastern Institute of Technology in the early 1990s, developing curricula in biology, botany, and environmental science. After completing a PhD in evolutionary ecology at Massey University in 2000, he undertook postdoctoral research at Otago on vestibular neurophysiology, endocannabinoids, brain injury and pain.
In 2008, Ashton gained employment as a confirmation path lecturer, continuing with cannabinoid pharmacology following his diagnosis with ALK-positive lung cancer in 2013, on targeted therapies for oncogenic ALK fusions from 2015, then publishing widely on drug synergy, cancer cell biology, and resistance mechanisms, using ALK+ cell lines and spheroid models.
Despite major personal health challenges, Ashton has maintained an active laboratory, supervised numerous postgraduate students and developed novel assays and curriculum content. His recent work has focused on SHP2 inhibitors, mitochondrial metabolism, and next-generation ALK inhibitors such as neladalkib. A committed teacher and public communicator and advocate, Ashton exemplifies pharmacology with “skin in the game,” bridging research, pedagogy, and patient experience in cancer drug development.
