About the event

From prophet to professor: Protecting spaces for mana Māori - Inaugural Professorial Lecture
As a mokopuna of the prophet Te Maihāroa (1800-1886), Kelli is a product of tīpuna resilience and revitalisation, and as such, her educational practice is underpinned by mana Māori; the unlimited potential of Māori. As Kaihautū: Te Kāhui Whetū, Kelli is an agent of transformational change, leading the highly successful Capable Māori programme which offers online kaupapa Māori degree pathways nationally. Mana Māori serves as her framework of practice, through the protection of mātauraka Māori, embedding indigeneity, and promotion of decolonial practices.

In this presentation, Kelli will explore her whakapapa connections to Māori prophetic movements, and how this rich cultural history has influenced her pedagogical approach of kaupapa Māori and Indigenous Autoethnography. She is the current Co-General Secretariate Asia Pacific Peace Research Association (2022-2026) and Co-Chair for the International Peace Research Association Conference 2025. Kelli mentors on the Doctor of Professional Practice programme, and in her previous role as Otago Polytechnic Māori Research Director, she supported tauira and kaimahi to develop a deeper understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and issues affecting Ngāi Māori, such as knowledge, power, race and privilege across the institution.

Kelli was recently awarded the Outstanding Indigenous Scholar for her scholarship and contributions towards Indigenous research at the Indigenous Inquiry Circles, International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry Conference 2024. Her research is widely published and she values the opportunity to privilege Māori and Indigenous voices to advance intergenerational visions of success and wellbeing for Indigenous people.
