The Charlotte DikeTrio returns to the Smokehaus!
Charlotte Dike’s performances draw on her unique music background including formal training, extensive collaborative experience, broad stylistic cultivation, and improvisational prowess to enhance and invigorate her music.
Born near St. Louis, Missouri, Charlotte was classically trained an early age and performed in studio recitals, with community orchestras, and on local television. After her family moved to the Seattle area, Charlotte spent her early teenage years studying at Academy of Music Northwest, then entered the University of Washington at age fourteen, where she attained a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance under Craig Sheppard. During her studies she attended Icicle Creek Piano Festival by invitation, performed regularly on the campus carillons, taught theory and ear training classes, and began playing professionally as an accompanist, church keyboardist, wedding musician, and at special events and parties.
While earning a Masters degree in Piano Performance at the University of British Columbia, Charlotte studied under scholarship with renowned Canadian pianist Jane Coop and delivered local solo recitals through the Artsway Ambassadors program. Apart from her classical studies, she embraced Vancouver’s international culture and thriving jam scene. In addition to her classical studies, she focused on collaborative improvisation and stylistic development, including blues, reggae, jazz, rock, and hip-hop. While studying traditional West African drum and dance with Dr. Kofi J. S. Gbolonyo, she gained a deep appreciation for rhythm, movement, groove, and audience participatory music. She performed regularly at Vancouver clubs and events alongside various different jazz, hip-hop, and experimental artists, including the Boom Booms, the Ponderosas, Janette King, and Omar Khan.
After returning to Seattle in 2011, Charlotte continued her work as a freelance musician, performing across many styles with all types of ensembles. Her collaborative experience includes chamber music ensembles, jazz combos and big bands, cover bands, choirs, music theatre, ballet, tap dance, and sketch comedy. She maintains a strong classical repertoire and technique while focusing on developing her unique improvisational style.
