Workshop - Residential Long-Term Care Settings - Design Guidelines
Open to researchers, policy-makers, providers, design and healthcare professionals, and individuals interested in design and planning of residential long-term care settings in Ireland!
On June 27, 2025, TrinityHaus Research Centre researchers will be holding their second stakeholder workshop as part of the Health Research Board-funded research project βPlanning and design for quality of life and resilience in residential long-term care settings for older people in Irelandβ.
The project, led by the TrinityHaus Research Centre in Trinity College Dublin, involves Age-Friendly Ireland, Age Action, HSE, and the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design and aims to provide research findings and recommendations related to the buildings and outdoor spaces (built environment) associated with long-term residential care settings for older people (nursing homes) in Ireland. This project also involves a number of collaborators, including the London School of Economics and Political Science, IADNAM, Nursing Homes Ireland, Care Champions, O'Connell Mahon Architects, Masstricht University, and built environment consultant Bill Benbow.
Building on the first stakeholder workshop (June 2024), this workshop will be an opportunity for stakeholders to feed into the development of a set of planning and design guidelines for new settings and the adaptation and retrofit of existing settings, all underpinned by Universal Design principles.
The aims of the workshop are:
To present and disseminate findings on key research activities, as well as gather feedback from stakeholders. In particular, researchers will present on:
To introduce work related to the development of a co-creation and engagement framework to support more meaningful involvement of older persons in built environment projects.
To provide an opportunity for stakeholders to feed into the development of the guidelines.
The event will be taking place in Trinity Central, 152-160 Pearse St.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dimitra Xidous (eGlkb3VzZCB8IHRjZCAhIGll).
Info: This session will provide an overview of key research findings, with a focus on care models, and setting size, configuration, & scale.
Info: This session will present the set of long term residential care (LTRC) key planning and design considerations that have emerged from research. These design considerations will underpin the design guidelines and to ensure that an integrated and holistic approach to Universal Design, quality of life, and resilience is adopted across all spatial scales for both new-build and retrofit/refurbishment LTRC projects.
Info: This session will present an overview of the Co-Creation and Engagement Framework developed to facilitate the participation of key stakeholders in the planning and design of LTRC settings. The framework is based on key processes, methods, and insights that can be used across all stages of the planning and design process, for both new-build projects and works to existing settings (i.e. extensions, remodelling, retrofit, or refurbishment).
