About Reykjavik Cathedral Choir

The Reykjavik Cathedral Choir (Dómkórinn í Reykjavík) is the official choir of the Reykjavik Cathedral in Iceland. It performs at weekly services in the Cathedral, many of which are broadcasted live on the national broadcasting service, such as the High Service on Christmas Eve and Easter morning, as well as services on other days of importance for worship and religious life in Iceland. It is also the choir’s duty to perform at various public events such as the inauguration of the President and the Bishop of the Iceland, at the annual opening of Alþingi (the Parliament) and on the National Day of Iceland, 17th of June.

The choir frequently gives concerts in Iceland and has commissioned and premiered numerous choir works, both by Icelandic and international composers. It has travelled abroad on several occasions performing music from all over the world, of different genres and ages. In 2019 the choir participated in the annual Meeting Music festival held in Salzburg as well as competing in the international choral competition where it ended second in the overall competition.

The conductor of Reykjavík Cathedral Choir is Lenka Mátéová. She was born in Czechoslovakia, completed her cantor’s degree at the Conservatory in Kroměříž and earned her master’s degree at the Academy of Music in Prague. During her studies, she won several awards in her home country and performed as a soloist across Europe. Mátéová has worked in Iceland since 1990 in various places and

positions; as a cantor at two different churches, as an organ soloist, as a chamber musician and accompanist for choirs and soloists. Furthermore, Mátéová has taught organ performance at the National School of Church Music and the Iceland University of the Arts. Currently Mátéová is the conductor of the Reykjavik Cathedral Choir and the Kópavogur Community Choir in addition to being a substitute conductor of two other choirs.
