Between Devotion and Deconstruction: Black Women, Faith & The Church Divide

The Growth Publication Project is hosting an honest, necessary dialogue exploring Black women’s relationship with the African American Church. The truth of the matter is that the relationship is changing and we are seeking Black American women  in the Wiregrass Area to engage in a conversation that holds space for different experiences—those who remain deeply devoted to the Church and those who have begun questioning or deconstructing their faith.

This discussion asks critical questions:

• What does the word deconstruction mean to devoted church attendees? ( be specific)
• What caused deconstructing Black women to start questioning their faith journey?
• Where does the division stem from—and can we understand each other beyond the divide?
• Are deconstructing Black women simply church hurt and bitter?
• Are women who remain faithful to church blind?

Our intention is not to invalidate, but to uncover the societal expectations placed upon Black women in faith spaces, to challenge assumptions, and to bring awareness to the complexities of this conversation. Please be advised the conversation will be captured and documented in various forms
