Taslimah Bey
Taslimah P. Bey began studying classical music at age 16, then switched to jazz in her senior year of high school. She started researching ragtime music and the roots of jazz while in college. When Taslimah heard Charlie Gabriel—clarinet and saxophone player with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band—play his horn, the music she had been reading about came alive. She formed Taslimah’s Ragtime Band, featuring early ragtime composers' compositions, including Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Tom Turpin, Artie Matthews, Harry P. Guy, and James P. Johnson. For her efforts in performing the music and lecturing on the lives of these highly talented 20th-century American composers, Taslimah received an award for the Preservation of African-American Music from the Society for the Culturally Concerned in Detroit.
Taslimah has performed at Jazz and Ragtime Festivals across the country, including the Scott Joplin Festival, where she was Artist-in-Residence for 2020, Greenfield Village’s Ragtime Street Fair, and the West Coast Ragtime Society’s Ragtime Festival. She has also performed with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans and the Blue Note Jazz Café in New York City. Taslimah is also a member of Vincent York’s Jazzistry, a live music presentation covering 400 years of US music history, illustrating how jazz grew from our shared multicultural heritage.
Taslimah’s Ragtime Band has also performed at the Detroit Institute of Arts as part of the Concert of Colors music festival. Taslimah was inducted into the historical archives at the Detroit Historical Museum as part of Veronica Johnson’s Detroit Women in Jazz exhibit. Taslimah can be heard on the Taslimah Bey, Live! and A Tribute to Ragtime, available on Amazon, iTunes, and CDBaby.com.

Upon graduating he began performing with the Detroit Symphony Civic Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Detroit's own Godfather of jazz, the late Marcus Belgrave. He has had the chance to also play for/with Chick Corea, Jeff Hamilton, Robert Hurst, Terence Blanchard, Kurt Elling, Delfayo Marsalis, John Clayton, The Count Basie Orchestra, Marcus Belgrave, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Leon Ware, N'Dambi, Jessica Care Moore, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Algebra Blessett, Mayaeni, Eric Roberson, Dwele, Goldie, Amp Fiddler and more over the past 15 years. In 2015 Jon started an independent label, 4EVR 4WRD (Forever Forward) to focus on making electronic music fused with elements of Jazz, Hip Hop, and other styles of music. "I feel that it is important for me as a musician to not only continue the rich culture and history of both jazz and electronic music but to also use my knowledge, theory, and experience to combine the two and take both genres to the next level!" Dixon has had the chance to perform/record with Artists/Bands such as Galaxy 2 Galaxy, Interstellar Fugitives, Timeline, Amp Fiddler, Jeff Mills, Mike Banks, Derrick May, Francesco Tristano, Kenny Dixon Jr., Carl Craig, and more in the U.S. and abroad. Dixon is one of the city's most sought-after musicians for every genre ranging from jazz to techno.
Marquis Johnson
Marquis began playing drums at the age of two in church. He was raised in a musical family where his gift was encouraged and cultivated. “I grew up with sticks in my hands. It was a calling that was discovered before I could form words. I am blessed and grateful for the gift.” He attended Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts (DSA). It was there that he was formally trained in varied musical genres. He studied under Edward Quick, Marcus Belgrave, Kenny Rogers, Rodney Whittaker, and the percussion section of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO). During high school, Marquis performed twice at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York City. Before completing high school, he competed for and won top honors in the coveted Michigan State Band & Orchestra Association (MSBOA) jazz drummer contest. After high school, he was a founding member of the very talented young band from Detroit called HotSauce.
Marquis has worked with Charlie Wilson and the Gap Band, Chubby Checker, CeCe Winans, R&B singer Neo, Alexander Zonjic, Kenny G., Ray Parker Jr., James Lloyd, Derrick Haddon, Travis Green, DSO, Roy Ayers, Byron Cage, Floetry, The Four Tops, Randy Scott, Bamm Davis, Lisa Page Brooks, to name a few. As a traveling musician, Marquis is also a respected drum instructor. He has worked for Axis Music Academy and is currently working for The Detroit Institute of Music Education.
“Teaching has become a new passion of mine. I have come to realize that my gift and my experiences are not just for me. The knowledge and experiences acquired are meant to be shared with someone else. I am a strong believer in mentorship. There is no greater feeling in the world than to see someone grow into greatness. Teaching allows me to pass on to others what has been given to me. It is a cycle that I pray continues with those that teach and mentor.”
He also became a full-time student at Rochester College, pursuing a degree in Biblical Studies. “I am grateful that music has led me to a path of purpose. I have grown to understand that my music is just a vehicle to share the love of Christ with everyone I come in contact with. My prayer is that someone is inspired to make Christ the center of his or her life. I want to be a part of God’s mission to restore His creation back to Him. I am a sincere witness that we are not fully alive until we are alive in Jesus. This is my passion behind every rhythm that plays.”
His influences include Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Vinnie Colaiuta, Brian Blade, Ladell Abrams, Myron Bell, Dana Davis, Steve Jordan, Steve Gadd, Papa Jo Jones, Al Jackson Jr., Mitch Mitchell, Alan Dawson, Quest Love, J.J.
