Wisconsin author Tamara Dean will join the Unbound writing community to lead a writing workshop on the theme of Writing From a Changing Place on Sunday, July 27th, at 4pm in the ArtHaus studio, located at 107 W. Broadway, Decorah IA. A suggested donation of $10 per person will go to ArtHaus for use of their space and copies of her book, Shelter and Storm, will be available for purchase through Dragonfly Books. Everyone is invited to this workshop series sponsored by the Oneota Valley Literary Foundation, with support from ArtHaus and Dragonfly Books. Be sure to join us the following evening, Monday July 28th, at 7pm at Pulpit Rock Brewery for a reading, Q&A, and signing with the author.
Writing From a Changing Place: Writing can help us reconcile with the changes confronting our favorite places and lead us to new ways of honoring, tending, and sharing those places. This workshop will guide you through depicting a beloved landscape in a vivid and compelling way. It will invite you to explore adaptations and futures that connect ourselves and our surroundings. You’ll learn techniques for conveying experiences and emotions in scenes and descriptions that will affect your readers deeply. You’ll leave the workshop with a draft that you can develop into a complete story, essay, poem, or longer work about the landscape that speaks to your heart. This workshop is open to writers with any level of experience working in any genre. We won't exchange feedback on drafts, but we'll gather in a spirit of curiosity and generosity to support our own and each other’s writing. There will be plenty of time for questions.
Unbound is a welcoming monthly writing community organized by the Oneota Valley Literary Foundation, created to support writers of all backgrounds and experience levels. This is a form-free space—whether you write poetry, prose, journaling, or something entirely your own, all are welcome. Each session offers time to connect with fellow creatives, spark ideas, and engage in guided writing. When available, visiting authors join the group to share insights into their craft and creative process, offering participants a deeper look into the writing life. Unbound meets on the last Sunday of each month from 4:00 to 5:30pm at ArtHaus in Decorah. Bring a notebook, your favorite pen, and whatever’s been waiting to be written.
Tamara Dean has been camping, fishing, hiking, and gathering wild foods from an early age, led and inspired by her parents. Her essays and stories have been published in The American Scholar, The Georgia Review, the Guardian, One Story, Orion, and The Progressive, and she is author of The Human-Powered Home: Choosing Muscles over Motors. She teaches writing independently and through writing centers across the nation.
