Join author Marilyn Higgins for a talk about her new book “Dreams of Freedom” which captures the history, mystery and power of Upstate New York in the years leading up to the Civil War. Religious fervor, rapid immigration, and burgeoning social movements spawned by the Erie Canal changed America and the world. Not unlike today, it was a time when Americans feared their nation was coming apart.
Marilyn Higgins’ lifelong connection to Upstate New York inspired her to write “Dreams of Freedom,” a tribute to the region’s deep historical roots and its influence on national identity. During her career as Chief Economic Development Officer for National Grid and Syracuse University, she uncovered the area’s hidden stories—exploring historic mansions, canal artifacts, and the vibrant legacy of 19th-century movements, including abolition, women’s rights, and Haudenosaunee culture. For two decades, Higgins has volunteered with the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. She now collaborates with the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum and her Canastota community to promote the “Abolitionist Freedom Walk,” a public reenactment of the 1835 canal journey and march by 104 abolitionists that led to the founding of the New York Anti-Slavery Society.
