About the event

Finding Safety in Community: Queer Allyship in Hostile Times
We are living through a dangerous and uncertain political landscape, with queer and trans folks (especially those at the intersections of multiple marginalities) experiencing increased violence and hostility. Given these systemic challenges, it is more important than ever to seek refuge in allied community. The queer community has a long history of keeping itself safe and resourcing its own people when larger systems fail to do so — what can we learn from these histories, and what efforts currently exist to continue those legacies? We’ll talk about resources you or your loved ones can tap into, as well as strategies for those wanting to be stronger allies to their queer friends or family members.

Avi Ivaturi (they/them) is a Brown trans child of immigrants and queer abolitionist organizer. They are passionate about cultivating anti-carceral systems of care built by and for Black and Brown, disabled, Mad queer and trans folks. Avi got their start in movement work by being involved in prison and police abolition organizing, and is grateful to be able to carry that political edge to queer liberation spaces. They currently serve as the Peer Support Organizer at SQSH (St. Louis Queer Support & Healing).

Lynn O'Brien is a seasoned vocalist, songwriter and performer with a soulful, dynamic voice. She has captivated thousands of audiences with her healing original songs, well-loved covers and compelling vocal improvisation - seamlessly blending genres like folk, jazz, pop, soul and blues. Lynn collaborates with creators across all mediums, and also soars as a solo artist; she accompanies her vocals on guitar, ukulele, piano, and occasional loop station to create an a cappella "one woman choir" effect. Drawing on her background as a board-certified music therapist, women's empowerment coach, speaker and event emcee, Lynn brings a deep sense of presence, authenticity and inventiveness to every stage.
