Welcome to the African Diaspora Colloquia: Cultural Spaces for Conversations, Performances, Traditions, and Crafts! Join us at Johnson C. Smith University for an afternoon of immersive cultural experiences where voices, traditions, and creative expressions from the African diaspora come together. This event creates a space for community dialogue, artistic exploration, and cultural preservation, highlighting the role of arts and culture as forms of resistance.
Community Touchpoint 1: Arts and Culture as Resistance is a powerful exploration of how creative practices shape identity and mobilize change. The event begins with a dynamic colloquium featuring diverse participants representing a spectrum of age groups and experiences. These voices will engage in a thought-provoking colloquium examining the role of art in resistance throughout the African diaspora.
Following the colloquium, immerse yourself in a live performance and spoken word segment that brings the power of storytelling to life, capturing the essence of resistance through creative expression. The segment highlights the lived experiences and cultural legacies of African-descended communities through performance and poetry.
To deepen the experience, we invite you to participate in an interactive Q&A session where panelists and audience members can exchange insights and perspectives, fostering a richer understanding of cultural resistance and artistic practice.
The event concludes with a hands-on workshop focused on Afro-Venezuelan and Afro-Peruvian Tambor, offering participants a chance to engage directly with rhythmic traditions rooted in resistance and cultural survival.
Come be part of a vibrant cultural dialogue that honors the past, celebrates the present, and envisions the future. Reserve your spot and join us in celebrating the richness and resilience of the African diaspora!
