H. R. “Randy” Spencer is a retired physician who spent most of his career in public mental health services for children with the Department of Mental Health and other state agencies. He received his MFA in Poetry from South Carolina in 2002. He has published in a number of journals and anthologies. There have been several table readings of his verse drama about Robert Frost, and it was featured in piccolo Spoleto. After the publication of his collection of nature and environmentally-inspired poems, “The Color After Green,” was published in 2019, he appeared on SCETV’s “By the River”, and read again at Piccolo Spoleto. His current book, “Andersonville: the Poem,” was written over almost 20 years, and reflects considerable research into Civil War participants, including the poet, Walt Whitman, who is frequently quoted. This book also is available in a companion Readers Theatre version for six readers to become the characters from the poems in dramatic reading. His current project is a collection of poems on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, two of which have received awards and been published.
