“Dancing About Architecture: Studies in Ekphrasis” will explore the creation of cross-genre art through generation, observation, and discussion.
Oregon State Professor of British Literature Rebecca Olson defines ekphrasis as, “a literary description of art.” This technique has been documented in works as old as "The Iliad," and the technique's umbrella is wide. For instance, consider that "RuPaul's Drag Race" is a documentary describing the art form of drag.
This lens aligns with Cavan Hallman's artistic vision that all art is essentially a form of adaptation.
"Dancing About Architecture: Studies in Ekphrasis" will include monthly open writing sessions for writers of all levels, with prompts provided relating to the concept of ekphrasis.
In the summer of 2025, Hallman will hold a presentation and panel discussion on ekphrasis and the process of cross-genre adaptation with other local artists.
Support is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Iowa Arts Council, which exists within the Iowa Economic Development Authority.
