Come to Friperie workshop and learn about the amazing Flax/Linen plant and fibre.
Know as flax in England but worldwide and in Cymraeg - it’s called linen. It’s the same amazing plant that gives us linseed, linseed oil, linen fibre, rope and paper. We’ve been making things with it for over 40,000 years and not so long ago most families would have had someone who knew how to spin and weave it.
This incredibly sustainable and beautiful fibre is making a welcome comeback in community gardens and small farms.
Artist Cat grows fibre flax in Cardiff at several sites, including Saint Fagan’s Museum. Join her to experience the satisfaction of turning straw into gold. Learn to process the plant into yarn, including rippling seed, breaking, scutching, hackling, washing, cording, distaff making and spinning with a drop spindle.
If you spin you can bring your own wheel.
Linen seed, prepared fibre, locally made flax hand tools and drop spindles will be available to buy so you can carry on your linen learning at home!
