The striking rock formations surrounding Skoorsteenberg remind me of the Cederberg mountains. Additionally, this trail features a hidden waterfall along the route, a gem that remains largely unknown to the public.

This is for your safety reasons, since we will all be leaving and returning as a group together. As an added measure of protection, on every walk, we have at least 3-5 two-way radios in the group to ensure that everyone is accounted for at all times.

FITNESS REQUIRED & TYPE OF TRAIL
This walk on offer will be an INTERMEDIATE SOULFUL WALK which includes some hilly sections along the way. If you can walk up Lions Head to the top comfortably then you can manage this route. Please also note the extended distances if in doubt of your fitness. Extra time is added along the way for extra stops
However if you are new to the group and have any doubt of your fitness, due to the terrain or duration, please call and I can advise accordingly. DETAILED FULL WALK DESCRIPTION ON OFFER

The Soulful East Fort Hout Bay Trail to Skoorsteenberg begins shortly past East Fort, constructed in 1796 as part of Hout Bay's coastal defences. A section of the route is on the Old Hoerikwagga Hiking Trail, going on down past the manganese mines, excavated from 1909 until 1911. There being no roads along Chapman’s Peak Drive in those times, ore was chute-conveyed 750m down to barges. This will be our tea stop with a vista over ruins gives time to reflect on industrial heritage in this development while you take in some views.
The route ascends Alfie’s Path, with dramatic rock formations such as Elephant’s Knee and Wrong Way Rock, named from the way they look. Baviaanskloof (“baboon ravine”) is crossed by the Trail, inhabited by troops of baboons, who call this home, but rarely visible. To Skoorsteenberg (1,076m) is an ascent of an ancient jeep track, leading one on to sweeping vistas of Hout Bay, Little Lion’s Head, and vineyards of Constantia. Its summit is a decent place for a picnic lunch, looking out over Orange Kloof Forest, a protected pristine ecological sanctuary.
The drop from Tierboskloof takes the Baviaanskloof River into a hidden waterfall, where the roar of water falling deepens the stillness of the surrounding fynbos. Alfie’s Path’s second half is on familiar markers, now juxtaposed against Chapman’s Peak’s dramatic landscape, and Karbonkelberg. Time on the 13.46km route allows taking in the nature-history mix.

DIRECTIONS FROM CAPE TOWN

The meeting point is 1.2km on the left on Chapmans Peak drive if coming from the Hout Bay side. There is limited parking in the parking area that will be signposted as Table Mountain National Park – East Fort. This parking is about 100m past the East Fort that will be on your right-hand side or on the seaside. If the parking area is full, then turn around and park on the left hand side as if heading back towards Hout Bay.
