Most of us would say that we hold compassion in our hearts, but it is often difficult to express in ways that are meaningful and mindful.. This workshop introduces using "The Alphabet of the Heart", created by founder of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford, James Doty, MD, as a meditation or intentional practice for bringing more compassion into our day to day lives.
The Compassionate Heart Metta Practice will also include stories about deities and bodhisattvas who embody compassion, sacred sound immersion, guided meditation, mindful movements helpful for self-care and building resilience, self-compassion and holding empathy without taking on the stress of others.
Participants will explore the practice of using a compassion bead mala, and how to integrate this into daily living. The beads of the mala represent the words of the mantra with an intention for bringing more compassion into one’s life. During the workshop, participants will make their own compassion bead mala to take home in a small silk brocade bag.
Metta practice with Cynthia Scrimshaw offers opportunities for gentle self-healing, connecting with heart wisdom and inviting grace into our daily living by cultivating mindfulness and developing compassion for oneself and others.
About Cynthia Scrimshaw ~
Before retiring from her professional life, Cynthia worked as an advanced practice holistic nurse and mental health nurse practitioner, teaching and counseling others with mindfulness and compassion-based therapies. Her life’s work has been built on fervent commitments to holism, heart-centered spirituality, personal growth, creative expression, diversity, and respect for human dignity and the natural world.
With advancing years and gathered wisdom through her life experiences, Cynthia's focus has increasingly centered around the simple, but profound concept of Metta - a practice of loving kindness, universal love and heartfelt concern for all living beings, in all situations. In her spiritual practice, she uses the Alphabet of the Heart with compassion mala beads to nurture a clear intention for embodying Metta and Compassion in her life. She offers workshops to share this practice with others.
