A guided walk across Buxton's coalfields and the high moors of the Pennine watershed to Three Shires Head returning via the Cat and Fiddle. Stories of intrepid miners, underground canals, turnpikes, early rail links and the infamous activies at Three Shires Head.
An opportunity to visit the site of hundreds of coal mines at one of the most exposed industrial sites in the country, and to learn about the impact they had on the surrounding road network and communities. Step back in time and see how the area has shed its barren and impassable past.
We'll also get the chance to see and hear a range of wildlife, including summer moorland bird visitors such as lapwing, curlew and golden plover.
If the weather plays its part, we will enjoy fantastic views over all compass points from the Wrekin and Long Mynd in the south to Beeston Castle and the Welsh hills in the west, Manchester and the surrounding hill to the north and Buxton and the Peak District high points of Kinder Scout and Mam Tor to the east.
Event Terrain: Moorland tracks and paths, occasionally boggy in places with steep rock sections and uphill paths.
Event Grade: Hard - longer more challenging walks usually with ascents and descents and rough terrain.
