The Critical Culture Group started by organising a conference in 2023. Its starting point was that culture was in crisis, that part of culture that gives a right to criticism, that contributes to the social context and, where appropriate, intervenes - in a gentler or more radical way. The event was both exhilarating and disheartening, because while it became clear that there is still room for critical thinking, it also became clear that the instability and division of the cultural field remains an oppressive reality.
We felt that this was not a phenomenon specific to Hungary - but, looking around us now, we see similar trends. There is a social, economic, political, environmental crisis, and our anxiety is just as multifaceted. The political environment is changing at an alarming speed, and the populists and semi-fascists of Central and Eastern Europe have even been strengthened in the wake of the US elections. Culture, art, easily becomes a servant of power, especially if its institutions give up the right and the possibility of autonomous speech.
But at the same time there are other tendencies. Illiberal regimes are suddenly toppling, assertiveness is fading, and for the first time in some big cities around us, and sometimes in Budapest, there is a sense that something might change. For us, the question is: what is the role of critical culture now?
We were looking for friends and with them for alternatives. Thinkers, creators, groups, organisations and examples of critical attitudes and strategies.
The aim of the symposium is to explore the problems/clusters of issues that arise, while trying to identify possible solutions or strategies to overcome the chaos. Our guests come from countries affected or affected by war, genocide, far-right ideology, nationalism, non-democratic legislation. As organisers or thinkers of Grassroots initiatives, the common ground with these cultural and academic professionals is that they are critical of the (oppressive) power structures.
We would like this year's event not only to be a discussion of theoretical discourses, but also to use art to make the abstraction of the crisis-language more tangible. Thus, on the second day, we will bring closer the many faces of crises, the possibilities of resistance at the individual and micro community level, through a workshop in the morning and a film screening in the afternoon.

The Critical Culture Group is a platform that reflects on cultural and political processes in Hungary and the region, on the possibilities of critique, resistance and alternatives from the perspective of autonomous, civil culture workers and creators. It tries to find ways to find solutions in the midst of the current crisis of democracy in Hungary by creating discussion situations.

A Kritikus Kultúra Csoport működését egy konferencia megszervezésével kezdte 2023-ban. Kiindulópontja az volt, hogy válságban van a kultúra, a kultúrának az a része, amely jogot formál a kritikára, hozzászól a társadalmi kontextushoz és adott esetben bele is avatkozik - szelídebb, vagy radikálisabb módon. Az esemény egyszerre volt felemelő és elszomorító, hiszen miközben egyértelművé vált, hogy a kritikai gondolkodásnak még van tere, az is világos lett, hogy a kulturális mező bizonytalansága és megosztottsága továbbra is nyomasztó valóság.
Éreztük, hogy nem speciálisan magyarországi jelenségről van szó - de, ahogy most körülnézünk, hasonló folyamatokat látunk. Társadalmi, gazdasági, politikai, környezeti krízis van, és szorongásunk legalább ennyire sokrétegű. A politikai környezet vészes sebességgel alakul át, az amerikai választások nyomán pedig Kelet-közép Európa populistái és félfasisztái még megerősítést is kaptak. A kultúra, a művészet könnyen válik a hatalom kiszolgálójává, főként, ha intézményei feladják az autonóm beszéd jogát és lehetőségét.
De ezzel egyidejűleg vannak más tendenciák is. Az illiberális rezsimek hirtelen megbillentek, a magabiztosság halványul, és most először érezni néhány nagyvárosban a környékünkön, és olykor Budapesten is, hogy valami változhat. Számunkra az a kérdés, hogy a kritikus kultúrának mi lehet a szerepe és a dolga most?
Barátokat kerestünk és velük együtt alternatívákat. Gondolkodókat, alkotókat, csoportokat, szerveződéseket és példákat, akik, illetve amelyek kritikus magatartást és különféle stratégiákat képviselnek.
A szimpózium célja, hogy feltárjuk a felmerülő problémákat/probléma halmazokat, ugyanakkor megpróbáljuk azonosítani a lehetséges megoldásokat vagy stratégiákat a káosz leküzdésére. Vendégeink olyan országokból érkeznek, amelyeket háború, népirtás, szélsőjobboldali ideológia, nacionalizmus, nem demokratikus törvényhozás érintett vagy érint. Grassroots kezdeményezések szervezői vagy gondolkodók, a közös pont ezekkel a kulturális és tudományos szakemberekkel az, hogy kritikusak az adott (elnyomó) hatalmi struktúrákkal szemben.
Szeretnénk, ha az idei esemény nem csak elméleti diskurzusok megvitatásával telne, hanem a művészet segítségével a krízis-nyelvezet absztrakciója kézzelfoghatóbb lehetne. Így a második napon délelőtt egy workshop, délután pedig filmvetítés keretein belül közelebb hozzuk a válság sokféle arcát, az ellenállás egyén- és kisközösségi-szintű lehetőségeit.

A Kritikus Kultúra olyan platform, amely elsősorban a magyarországi és a térségi kulturális, politikai folyamatokról, a kritika, az ellenállás és az alternatívák lehetőségeiről gondolkodik az autonóm, civil kultúrmunkások, alkotók szemszögéből. Beszédhelyzeteket teremtve próbál utakat keresni a magyarországi demokrácia jelenlegi válsága közepette.
