NABA-Central KY Butterfly Walk

JOIN US for our first Butterfly Walk of the year! The weather is finally going to cooperate and we should have a sunny, warm day. Our first stop is at Tom Dorman State Nature Preserve in Garrard County. This event is FREE but donations are always appreciated. This hike not recommended for children.

Tom Dorman is a 945 acre State Nature Preserve in the palisades region of the Kentucky River in Garrard and Jessamine Counties. A variety of habitats are observable at the different elevation levels of the preserve. Very good wildflower spotting spring through fall, and better river and palisade views in winter.

DIRECTIONS: (maps are posted in the discussion area of this event) The parking area is just off US Hwy 27. From Nicholasville, Jessamine County, go South on Hwy 27. Cross the bridge over the KY River into Garrard County. The parking area will be immediately on your right. There is a brown and white sign that says “Kentucky River Palisades Tom Dorman State Nature Preserve.”

We plan on staying on the lower trail, but the entrance hill from the parking area to the main park is quite steep & rocky. Please come well-nourished, bring water and/or snacks, bug spray (ticks are bad all year round), hats, sunscreens, wear appropriate shoes, pants, socks, etc. Hiking poles are recommended, if you need them. No butterfly nets will be used. It's okay if you cannot stay the entire three hours. I always give extra time for leisurely walk.
