Sunday Salons at Spectrum features local NYC artists in solo and collaborative genre-fluid sets of imaginative and thoughtful work, set in a cozy, salon-style environment. Hosted in the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition on the Red Hook waterfront, the salons take place in the cafe lounge area during art exhibitions. The first concert of the series will take place on August 24th at 4:00 pm and features solo works by Concetta Abbate, violin/voice, Melinda Faylor, piano and electronics, and Steve Long, piano.
About the artists
Concetta Abbate (She/They) centers death, life, and their interplay in her work as a violinist, vocalist, and music composer. Her music elegantly crosses genres, drawing on her classical training and study in jazz, folk, and popular forms. Her major compositions include Falling in Time (2015), Mirror Touch (2020), LAMINARIA a folk horror chamber music suite (2024) and Echo Glass (2024). These works explore her lived experience of trauma, disability and neurodivergent grief. Concetta is a NEDA proficient Death Doula and runs a music memorial service called Sound & Memory (www.SoundandMemory.com). Concetta is a voting member of the Grammys. She holds degrees in Music, Education and Anthropology from Smith College (BA) as well as Columbia University (MA). She has won awards from New Music USA, New York State Council of the Arts, New York Foundation of the Arts, The Rauschenberg Foundation, The Human Impacts Institute, The International Association of Artists, Scientists and Synesthetes and Composers Now.
Melinda Faylor is a pianist/composer based in NYC who works in various media to weave together dense and mercurial sound worlds using field recordings, synthesized sound and piano. Current projects include a solo album, Melia chamber trio, and Summer 2025 concerts and masterclasses in Tunisia with Cultures in Harmony.Steve Long, a lifelong New Yorker from Canarsie, Brooklyn, is an artist and organizer working with sound, language, and space. His interest in music began at age 11 when a derelict piece of furniture, formerly known as a piano, was moved into his family’s home. For him, creative work, as a composer or curator, is an act of facilitation. To this end, he constructs situations that allow collaborators to push out into corners and luxuriate in both physical and metaphysical space. His work organizes collective imagined futures unencumbered by incessant categorization. He studied composition at the Manhattan School of Music before receiving his BA in linguistics from the American University of Rome. He received an MMA in Contemporary Improvisation from the New England Conservatory of Music.
