In commemoration of Black August, the theme of the night will be unconditional love and all its forms, to honor the lives, deaths and significant moments throughout its legacy. How was loved modeled for you growing up? How have you loved up to now? How would you like to be loved moving forward? What is the love that is still needed in this world, in your community and in your life?
Come speak on it, share art on it, and be felt in it.
naked. is not your typical open mic. it’s "the open mic without a mic"—a curated space of fluidity that celebrates vulnerability, creativity, and community discourse. there’s no mic or stage, and ALL art forms are welcome. it’s a space that reclaims art as a spiritual and healing practice. it’s a place for community to build, practice intimacy, and step outside their comfort zones.
originally created in New Orleans in February 2018, those who attend are invited to be vulnerable, or naked—free from the armor and masks often worn to navigate the world, in a space that asks:
if you could be naked—without judgment—how would you show up, what would you say, what would you share?
Originally started in the 1970s by California prisons, Black August is a way to “honor the lives and deaths of Black political prisoners killed by the state, bring awareness to Pr*son conditions, and to honor the radical tradition of Black resistance against anti-Black state violence systemic oppression.”
Many siginifcant events in the Black Liberation struggle have also taken place in August. Significant dates include, but aren't limited to: Enslaved Africans first being brought to British North America in August 1619. The Haitian Revolution beginning in August 1791. Nat Turner' Rebellion in August 1831. Emacipation Day abolishing slavery in British colonies on August 1, 1834. The birth of Fred Hampton on August 30, 1948. The abduction, torture and lynching of Emmitt Till in August 1955.
