Annual Juneteenth Party!
Panel Discussion featuring Dr. Shameka Poetry Thomas and Katonya Trent
In partnership with Spoken Black Girl
Open mic, drinks, music, & more
Greenlight's annual Juneteenth event, highlighting Black creatives and topics that directly impact Black livelihood, is back! This year, during a crucial time in the fight for reproductive rights, Greenlight is calling attention to Black maternal health in the United States. Panelists Dr. Shameka Poetry Thomas (Global Maternal and Child Health Scientist) and Katonya Trent (premature birth advocate, propelled by her own traumatic birth experience to create Konnected Through 22) come together for a discussion on their respective work and the long, ongoing fight for Black mothers. Their discussion is moderated by Rowana Abbensetts-Dobson, as founder of Spoken Black Girl, whose recent publication Issue 5: Motherhood speaks on the disparities of Black maternal child-health in the U.S. Following the discussion, several performers take the stage for an open mic on motherhood and the maternal mortality crisis in the Black American community. Drinks and refreshments from Black-owned Brooklyn businesses Jaylee's Treats and Happy Cork will be served, and a portion of proceeds from all purchases on June 20 will be donated to Ancient Songs, a national birth justice organization working to eliminate maternal and infant mortality and morbidity among low-income Black and Latinx people.
