National Fishing Remembrance Day - Sunday 11 May 2025 - is a day for reflection and commemoration of all those who have lost their lives while working in fishing in the UK.
In Devon, Helen Lovell-Smith Fishermen's Mission Area Officer will be holding our quayside service in Brixham at 4pm on the rising tide. This year we have the honour of being the main service for England.
The service will also be shown live on Facebook via this page for families who can not travel to Brixham.
The Torbay and Exmouth lifeboats will be alongside to take floral tributes to sea following the service (please remove plastic wrapping). We will be joined by Mark Greet Chair of Fishermen's Mission Trustees, Tina Barnes from the Seafarers Charity, Caroline Voaden MP, The Worshipful The Mayor of Torbay Hannah Stevens, Rev. Dr Philippa Bellows and musical accompaniment will be from Eclipse and Missin' Tackle.
A roll call of fishermen's names lost in the pursuit of fish in local waters, or lost away but from local ports will be read out. Fishing remains one of the most dangerous occupations in peacetime England. In the future, fishermen's names which begin in 1817 will be written in a memorial book to be displayed at All Saints Church, Brixham.
